How Good Drivers Can Lower Collision and Comprehensive Costs (Keep Your Liability)

The short version

Your car bill has a few parts. Liability is the part the state usually makes you keep. It helps pay if you hurt someone else or their stuff.

Collision and comprehensive are the parts that help with damage to your car (crash, theft, storm, and similar). Those two lines are often where the bill gets high.

You can look for ways to lower those two lines without dropping the liability your state requires.

Practical steps that help many drivers

  1. Ask for each line by itself. When you shop, ask every company to show liability, collision, and comprehensive as separate numbers. Then you can see what collision and comprehensive alone cost.
  2. Compare the same limits the same day. Get at least three or four quotes with the same limits and deductibles so you are comparing apples to apples.
  3. Raise the deductible only if you can pay it. Moving from a $500 deductible to $1,000 can lower the premium if you can keep that much in savings for a repair bill.
  4. Ask about good-driver and low-mileage discounts. Clean records and fewer miles often help. Bring your current declarations page so the quotes match your cars and drivers.
  5. Keep liability in place. Do not drop the coverage your state requires. Shop the optional pieces that protect your own car.

Another option for collision- and comprehensive-style costs

Some good drivers look at a mutuality group for the cost of repairs to their own car, while they keep liability with their regular insurer.

Good Driver Club (GDC) is a mutuality group. Members share the cost of each other’s vehicle repairs for eligible damage. GDC is not insurance. It can be an alternative to collision and comprehensive coverage for that kind of repair cost. It does not replace the liability insurance your state requires.

GDC says accident-free members can possibly save up to 40% on those collision- and comprehensive-style costs. Results vary by driver and vehicle and are not guaranteed.
